What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a high-altitude orbital view split into two dominant masses: on the left, the deep turquoise and navy blue of the Indian Ocean, on the right, the arid expanse of Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The boundary between them is an irregular, jagged coastline with tiny offshore islands, shallow bays and pale sediment plumes that cloud the nearshore water with whitish and greenish halos. The land is rendered in a palette of ochre, burnt terracotta, brick red and dusty brown, cut by pale, sinuous dry riverbeds and ephemeral rivers that flow like yellowish veins toward the sea. Textures are rough and eroded: mottled plains, low plateaus and faint mountain ridges toward the bottom of the frame. Bright, high sun illuminates the mineral soil, revealing relief through subtle color shifts and soft shadows. There are no visible clouds or settlements at this scale, only pure, vast geography, dry, warm and profoundly isolated.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the sharp contrast between ocean blue and desert red to grasp the continental scale. Then trace the pale rivers winding across the arid land toward their mouths on the coast. Finally notice the light sediment plumes and salt flats along the shoreline that reveal the extreme dryness of the environment.

ContextContexto

Cataloged as iss072e007019, the photograph was taken on October 1, 2024 from the International Space Station while orbiting about 262 miles above Earth, according to the NASA/JSC source description. It shows the hot, sparsely populated desert coast of the Pilbara region on the Indian Ocean in Western Australia, an area known for its arid terrain and extensive mineral landscapes. The image is classified as scientific photography / imagery from the JSC department and is housed in the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/JSC. No further details about individual authorship beyond the JSC attribution are provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Pilbara contains some of Earth’s oldest exposed rocks, with formations over 3 billion years old, partly visible from space due to the sparse vegetation seen in the image.

  1. How does your perception of a desert change when seen from 400 kilometers above instead of from ground level?¿Qué cambia en tu percepción de un desierto al verlo desde 400 kilómetros de altura en lugar de a nivel del suelo?
  2. How does the near absence of visible human presence along such a large coastline make you feel?¿Cómo te hace sentir la ausencia casi total de signos humanos en una costa de esta escala?
  3. What do the winding dry riverbeds on the red soil suggest to you about water and time in this landscape?¿Qué te sugiere el trazo de los ríos secos sobre la tierra roja acerca del agua y el tiempo en este paisaje?

From my perspective I focus on the matter and time held in this image. It is not a painting, it is a scientific photograph from the International Space Station, yet I read its surface as if it were mineral pigment. I see ochres, terracottas and burnt reds of the Pilbara land against the deep blue and turquoise of the Indian Ocean. The whitish halos of sediments and the pale veins of dry rivers speak to me of erosion and fragility. It is a record that must be preserved with precision, without retouching that could alter its geological testimony.

What excites me is the point of view: this photo was taken on October 1, 2024 from the International Space Station, about 420 kilometers high above the Indian Ocean. It is a zenithal and oblique orbital view that lets us see the Pilbara coast in Western Australia like a living map. With no clouds or city lights, just the contrast between the mineral desert and the sea. It reminds me that orbiting is also observing and that from that height we better understand how isolated and vast our planet is.

It looks like Earth is split in two! On one side the super blue sea and on the other the reddish land like a burnt crayon. The coast is not straight, it has lots of little curves, tiny islands and the water near the shore looks whitish because of sand. The rivers look like yellowish little veins trying to reach the sea but they are dry. I do not see houses or people, just hot land and a lot of loneliness. I want to trace the river paths with my finger all the way to the water.
