What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of a bright, clean white hall, a group of six technicians wearing pale light-blue coveralls, green hairnets and white face masks surrounds a large rectangular metal structure. Four of them kneel on the glossy gray floor, with blue gloves, carefully holding and aligning two hardware components; two others stand, gripping slings and chains that hang from an overhead crane. The upper piece, made of silvery metal with golden details and dark edges, hovers just a few centimeters above the white wheeled base. In the background the industrial interior of the Space Station Processing Facility is visible: fluorescent ceiling lights, equipment wrapped in plastic, a large blurred tank or module, and other people watching, one in a turquoise shirt and dark sweater. The light is cool, even and clinical, without harsh shadows. Smooth metal surfaces, the disposable fabric of the suits and the shine of the floor are clearly perceptible. The scene conveys collective precision, focus and delicate manual work at human scale in front of space technology.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the suspended metal rectangle and the blue-gloved hands guiding it millimeter by millimeter. Then follow the chains up to the ceiling to grasp the weight and mechanical support. Notice the observer with crossed arms in the background, who reveals the human tension behind technical precision.

ContextContexto

Photograph taken on October 2, 2017 by Leif Heimbold for NASA at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, inside the Space Station Processing Facility. It shows the arrival of the Materials International Space Station Experiment-Flight Facility, or MISSE-FF, hardware. According to the source record, technicians assist as one component is lowered and secured onto another. MISSE is designed to test various materials and computing elements on the exterior of the International Space Station, exposed to vacuum, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet radiation, direct sunlight and extreme heat and cold, to assess durability for future spacecraft designs. It was scheduled for delivery to the station on a future commercial resupply mission. The names of the technicians pictured are not recorded.

MISSE is a family of experiments flying since 2001 outside the International Space Station; the Flight Facility version shown here allows samples to be swapped without spacewalks, using robotic systems.

The conservatorLa restauradora

From a conservation perspective I am struck by the contrast between the pristine clean room and such careful human touch. The blue gloves, pale blue gowns and green hair covers are not decoration, they are a barrier against contamination. The silver metal with golden details reflects the cool light without harsh shadows and the bright gray floor would reveal every particle. Hand-aligning two components that will face vacuum and radiation demands absolute precision here in Florida on October 2 2017, before launch.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is that this metallic rectangle does not stay on Earth. It is MISSE-FF, a platform to test materials outside the International Space Station. Think about what it will face up there: vacuum, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet radiation, direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Here, in the Space Station Processing Facility at Kennedy Space Center, six technicians assemble it with slings and an overhead crane. It is the prior step, human and collective, before exposing it to real space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like they are building a giant space Lego set but they cannot touch it without gloves. There are six people in light blue coats and little green hats, four are kneeling on the shiny floor and two are standing holding chains coming from the ceiling. The silver thing with gold is hovering just a bit above the white base with wheels. Everyone is super focused so it fits perfectly. I like that they work as a team as if they were doing surgery on a robot.
