What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of a wide, horizontal photograph, a white Boeing 747 taxis along a runway carrying a second, smaller aircraft on its back: the Space Shuttle Discovery. The 747 fills the middle ground from left to right, shown in perfect side profile, with a blue stripe along its windows, two visible engines under its swept wing, multiple landing-gear wheels, and the NASA logo in blue and red on its tall tail. Above it, secured by struts, Discovery appears slightly weathered, its white tiles grayed and streaked, its nose and wing edges black, and its raised tail fin marked with black trim. The words United States, a small U.S. flag, and the name Discovery can be read on its fuselage. In the foreground, bands of pale concrete and green grass separate the viewer from the aircraft, while a crowd of tiny workers in neon yellow and orange vests, parked pickup trucks, and service vehicles emphasize the immense scale. Behind the runway stretches a dense line of dark green trees, brick office buildings with blue-gray roofs, and a flat, overcast sky that gives the scene soft, diffuse light and muted colors.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the impossible silhouette: one aircraft resting on top of another, then compare their noses, wings, and tails. Next, look for the tiny people and pickup trucks in the foreground; they turn a familiar plane into a measure of enormous scale. Finally, examine Discovery's stained, worn underside, a detail that shifts the scene from a technical maneuver to the ending of a working life.

ContextContexto

According to the source, Sean Smith photographed this scene for NASA on April 17, 2012, at Washington Dulles International Airport. The Space Shuttle Discovery is mounted on a NASA Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a modified airliner used to ferry orbiters between sites because shuttles could glide but could not fly under their own power in the atmosphere. The source describes Discovery as the first orbiter retired from NASA's shuttle fleet, after the program ended in 2011. Its final destination is not stated in the source data, although Dulles is near the museum where it is probably headed; that detail is not confirmed here.

Curious detailDato curioso

Discovery flew 39 space missions, more than any other orbiter in NASA's shuttle fleet.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when a spacecraft designed for orbit is seen slowly riding on top of an airplane?¿Qué cambia cuando una nave diseñada para estar en órbita se ve avanzando despacio sobre un avión?
  2. How do the small human figures shape our understanding of technological achievement and collective labor?¿Cómo influyen las figuras humanas diminutas en nuestra idea del logro tecnológico y del trabajo colectivo?
  3. Should a worn, retired machine be preserved as it last flew, or restored to look new?¿Conviene conservar una máquina retirada y desgastada tal como voló por última vez, o restaurarla para que parezca nueva?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time has left visible. Discovery does not shine like it just left the factory: its white tiles look grayish and streaked, with the nose and wing edges in black and the raised tail with dark bands. On its fuselage I read United States, the small flag and the name Discovery. Below, the white 747 with a blue stripe, its two visible engines and many landing gear wheels delicately bear that weight. The soft, overcast light does not hide the wear, it reveals it.

What excites me is understanding why they travel together. Discovery could glide when returning from space, but it could not fly under its own power in the atmosphere, so it needed this NASA-adapted 747 to move between sites. This photo by Sean Smith on April 17, 2012 at Washington Dulles captures exactly that: one aircraft carrying another. I see the perfect side view of the 747 moving along the runway and, on top, the first orbiter retired after the program ended in 2011, huge and yet being carried.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant airplane is giving another one a piggyback ride! The one on the bottom is white with a little blue stripe and lots of tiny wheels, and the one on top is Discovery, whitish with a little black nose and words that say United States. Around them there is green grass, strips of concrete and super tiny people in neon yellow and orange vests that make everything look HUGE. Behind there are trees, brick buildings and a gray sky that makes the colors look soft.

  1. #1

Look at the fuselage of the upper orbiter: what two English texts can be read on its side?

    HintPista

Look for letters on the white body, near the little flag.

  2. #2

On the white airplane below, how many engines are visible under the angled wing?

    HintPista

Count the cylinders under the wing seen in side view.

  3. #3

Look at the tiny people near the runway: what colors are their reflective vests?

    HintPista

They are very bright colors worn by the workers that stand out against the green grass.
