What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground stretches a vast, pale concrete apron, almost empty, crossed on the right by a thin white painted line. Parked diagonally across the middle ground, pointing to the left, is an enormous white Boeing 747, seen from its front quarter. A horizontal blue stripe runs along its fuselage beneath two rows of small windows, and its rounded nose dominates the left side of the image. Mounted on top, like a second, smaller aircraft riding piggyback, sits the space shuttle: white and gray, with a dark, heat-worn underside, a blunt nose, a swept triangular wing, and a raised tail fin marked with dark details. Its scale only becomes clear against the 747 and the tiny ground vehicles below: a mobile stairway pressed against an open door, with two small human figures at the top, a dark service vehicle, and a luggage cart to the far left. The aircraft's four engines hang beneath long wings that extend toward the right. Above, a bright blue sky filled with scattered, wispy white clouds takes up half the frame, lit by clear daylight. In the far distance, a low line of trees closes the horizon.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the enormous nose of the 747 on the left, then follow the blue stripe until you find the small stair vehicle: that contrast gives you the true scale. Next, lift your gaze to the shuttle and notice its darkened underside, so different from the carrier aircraft's clean white surface. Finally, look for the tiny figures at the top of the stairs.

According to the source, this photograph by Sean Smith, dated April 17, 2012, and preserved by the NASA Image and Video Library, shows the space shuttle Discovery mounted atop a NASA 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft at Washington Dulles Airport. The source describes Discovery as the first orbiter retired from NASA's shuttle fleet. These specially modified 747s were used to carry orbiters piggyback between landing sites and launch or maintenance facilities, since shuttles could fly in space and glide back to Earth but could not travel such distances on their own power.

I focus on traces and materials: below, the pale concrete runway with its thin white painted line looks pristine, contrasting with visible wear above. I see two machines layered: the white Boeing 747 with a blue stripe and small windows, and piggybacking on top the Discovery in whitish and gray tones with a dark underside marked by heat. I wonder how that thermal surface is protected during such a ferry flight, positioned diagonally on the 747, with four engines exposed and the vertical tail standing tall under an intense blue sky.

What excites me is not the spaceflight itself but the atmospheric ferry: an orbiter that could only glide back, traveling atop a specially modified 747. According to the record, this is Discovery photographed by Sean Smith on April 17, 2012 at Washington Dulles Airport, the first orbiter retired from the fleet. Seeing it mounted diagonally, with its blunt nose and triangular wing, reminds me why they needed to carry it piggyback between landing, launch or maintenance sites.

It looks like a giant airplane is giving a little airplane a piggyback ride! The one below is huge, white with a blue line, with super long wings and four engines hanging. On top goes the little shuttle, whitish with a dark belly and a tail sticking up. It is parked diagonally on a huge empty runway. Below you can see tiny carts and a little stair truck with two tiny people. It looks funny and powerful at the same time, as if they were about to take off together into the cloudy sky!
