What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows three human figures in stark black silhouette, standing on a flat, dark expanse that appears to be an airfield or open plain. The sky fills most of the frame, covered by a dense, textured layer of gray and white clouds with wavy, rippled patterns stretching toward the horizon. Light comes from behind the clouds, creating high contrast that erases facial features and uniform colors, leaving only outlines. From left to right, the first figure stands with arms crossed, the second holds a small radio or handheld device near the face in the right hand, and the third leans slightly forward, seemingly observing or engaging with the others. They wear uniforms suggesting an organized corps, with shapes hinting at pockets, sleeves and caps. No facial expressions are discernible. The background horizon is low and dark, with no visible buildings, emphasizing the vastness of the sky. The palette is dominated by grays, blacks and bluish whites, and the overall mood is solemn, quiet and anticipatory, as if the group is waiting for a moment in the sky to occur.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the three silhouettes and their different postures, then look up to the dramatic, textured cloud cover that dominates the frame. Notice how the backlight turns a scientific field operation into an almost theatrical scene. Look for the small radio in the hand, a detail that links quiet contemplation with active data collection.

ContextContexto

Photograph taken on April 8, 2024 at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans by Michael DeMocker for NASA/MSFC. It depicts Civil Air Patrol cadets Benjamin Errington, Caden Thomas and Isabelle Cooper of the Alvin Callander Composite Squadron during the CAP Solar Eclipse Mission, a continent-wide project in partnership with NASA to record eclipse data and its effect on VHF radio operations. They spent over six hours taking measurements. On that day a total solar eclipse tracked along a narrow path from Mexico's Pacific coast to Newfoundland, Canada, while a partial eclipse was visible across much of North America and parts of Europe and Central America. New Orleans is home to NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility.

Curious detailDato curioso

The April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse was the last to be visible in North America until 2044, and even where clouds obscured the view, as in New Orleans, Civil Air Patrol cadets across the continent collected synchronized data for NASA for more than six continuous hours.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does seeing science as silhouettes under a dramatic sky change your idea of scientific work compared to a laboratory image?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la ciencia al verla representada como siluetas bajo un cielo dramático en lugar de como laboratorio?
  2. What does the shared waiting of three young cadets in front of an uncontrollable astronomical event convey to you?¿Qué te transmite la espera compartida de tres jóvenes frente a un fenómeno astronómico que no pueden controlar?
  3. In what ways does the heavy cloud cover, which hid the partial eclipse, make this photograph more meaningful?¿De qué manera la nubosidad, que ocultó parcialmente el eclipse, vuelve más interesante esta fotografía?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what light does to matter. The three silhouettes are sharply cut against the sky, with no color or facial features, just pure outline. That backlighting also reveals the condition of the sky: dense, gray, wavy clouds filtering the eclipse light. As a conservator I think about fragility: this is a field document, exposed to humidity and outdoor light for hours. Its value lies in preserving that moment of collective work under a sky that did not reveal the sun, but did record the effort.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What is fascinating here is what you cannot see. On April 8, 2024 a total eclipse crossed North America from Mexico to Canada, but in New Orleans it was only partial and the sky was overcast. These three Civil Air Patrol cadets did not come to just watch, they came to measure. For more than six hours at Lakefront Airport they recorded how the eclipse affected VHF radio communications for NASA. This photo speaks of real citizen science: watching the sky even when clouds hide the event.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like three superheroes watching the sky. You only see them as little black shadows and you cannot see their faces because of the light. The sky is huge and full of clouds like gray waves. One has arms crossed, another holds a little radio near his mouth and the third leans a bit forward to see. I like that they are together on a dark open place waiting for something important. Even though it is cloudy it feels like something magical is about to happen above them.

  1. #1

Look closely at the silhouettes cut against the sky: how many people make up the group on the open area?

    HintPista

Count the black outlines standing on the dark surface, from left to right.

  2. #2

One of the figures holds a small object near the face for the radio mission: what is it?

    HintPista

It is the device they used to record the eclipse effect on communications.

  3. #3

The sky fills almost the whole image, but it is not clear: how is its appearance described?

    HintPista

Think of the gray and white texture that blocks the light and hides the sun directly.
