What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a horizontal composite on an absolute black background showing nine solar disks aligned left to right, capturing the advance of a partial solar eclipse. Each sun appears in a warm hue, ranging from pale beige to golden orange, with a subtly grainy texture and a softly glowing edge; the area obscured by the Moon is pure black and sharply cut. The sequence tells a visual story: at the start, only a small bite is missing from the upper right edge of the disk; then the shadow grows into a broad concave C, turning into a thin, almost thread-like luminous crescent at the center, where only a slender bright arc remains. From that minimum, light returns symmetrically, with crescents widening until the circle is nearly fully restored in the final frame. In the foreground the disks dominate, crisp and uniform in size, occupying the central band; there is no landscape or people, only the black void that isolates and emphasizes the phenomenon. Light is the contrast itself between the brilliant photosphere and the opaque lunar occlusion. Subtle details include slight irregularities along the lunar edge, a faint residual glow at the bottom of some suns, and variations in the thickness of the arc that reveal the continuous and precise motion of the alignment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First scan the row from left to right as if reading the passage of time. Pause at the fifth disk, the thinnest, and notice how a simple arc of light holds the whole composition together. Compare the first and last frames: almost identical, yet the small asymmetry reminds you that time never returns in exactly the same way.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a composite of nine photographs showing the progression of a partial solar eclipse near Banner, Wyoming, on Monday, August 21, 2017, credited to NASA/Joel Kowsky and held in the NASA Image and Video Library. On that day a total solar eclipse swept across a narrow swath of the contiguous United States from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina, while a partial eclipse was visible across the entire North American continent and parts of South America, Africa and Europe. The work belongs to the Space and science category and uses photography / scientific imaging as its technique. No further details about equipment or the compositing process are provided, but it is probably a sequence taken at regular intervals to document the astronomical event.

Curious detailDato curioso

The August 21, 2017 eclipse was the first total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States since 1979 and the first to cross from coast to coast in 99 years, since 1918.

From my craft I look at how this sequence preserves light. Each of the nine suns keeps the same size and sharpness against that absolute black background, which speaks of a very controlled record. I notice the warm tones between pale beige and golden orange, the grainy texture of the photosphere and the perfect cut of the lunar shadow. I am drawn to the symmetry of the visual story, from the small initial bite to the thin central crescent and the return of light, with no landscape to distract.

What you see are nine photos of the eclipse progression on August 21, 2017 near Banner, Wyoming. The image was released as a composite by NASA credited to Joel Kowsky. I love recognizing the geometry: the Moon bites the disk from the upper right, forms an ever tighter C and leaves only a thin bright arc at the center, then opens again. It is the progression of a partial eclipse, while on that day totality crossed in a narrow band from Oregon to South Carolina.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like nine suns lined up in the night, as if someone took bites out of them. First there is a tiny bite on top, then it becomes a big C and then only a thin bright fingernail is left in the middle, almost gone! Then the light comes back and the sun becomes round again. I like counting them one by one and seeing how they change against the black background, with nothing else around, just light and shadow playing.
