What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the fractured surface of Europa, Jupiter's icy moon, in grayscale, presented as a nearly identical pair of diagonal views against a deep black background. A broad, smooth band of medium gray runs through the center, flanked by rough, striated, whitish terrains that look like crumpled paper or broken ice. Thin, bright, double-crested ridges and lineaments cross both terrains, with soft shadows that reveal subtle topography. Some ridges form curved arcs and intersect at various angles. Near the bottom a cluster of small pits and craterlets is visible. The illumination is low-angle and even, typical of an orbital view, enhancing texture and grooves. A jagged black zigzag gap separates the two halves, and a graphic scale bar at the bottom indicates 5 km. The mosaic edges are irregular and serrated, showing that the picture is a composite of several frames.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the large smooth band in the center, then at the striated terrain surrounding it. Trace with your eyes the bright ridges that cut across like scars and see how some cross others, revealing layers of geologic time. Pause on the paired views placed side by side: they are intended for stereo viewing and make the relief stand out.

ContextContexto

The image titled 'Folds on Europa' was released on August 11, 2000 and is credited to NASA/JPL, with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and Brown University, according to source data. It comes from the NASA Image and Video Library and is catalogued as a scientific photograph and imagery in the space and science category. It depicts folds and bands in the icy crust of Europa, one of Jupiter's Galilean moons explored by the Galileo mission in the 1990s. No further details about the exact location are given, but the visible scale confirms features several kilometers across.

Curious detailDato curioso

Europa's surface is made of water ice marked by ridges and bands created by crustal movement; beneath that ice, scientists consider it likely that a subsurface ocean of liquid water exists.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I first look at the support: this stereo pair mosaic has jagged, irregular edges that reveal it was assembled from several orbital frames and a zigzag cut separating two almost identical diagonal views. I focus on the central smooth band in medium gray, contrasted with the rough, whitish terrain that looks like crumpled paper. The bright double ridges with soft shadows show pristine relief. The 5 km scale bar at the bottom is key to grasping the magnitude without altering the original surface.

For me this image published on August 11, 2000 by NASA/JPL with Johns Hopkins APL and Brown University is a window to Europa, the icy moon of Jupiter explored by the Galileo mission in the nineties. I see the smooth band crossing diagonally flanked by fractured ice and double ridges forming intersecting arcs, all in grayscale against a deep black background. The low-angle orbital light highlights furrows and kilometer-scale folds. With the 5 km scale bar I understand that each wrinkle is actually an ice mountain range on a planetary scale.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like white chocolate that broke and then someone tried to smooth it in the middle! I see two identical photos placed diagonally on a background as black as space. In the center there is a smooth gray road, and on the sides everything is wrinkled and scratched like crumpled paper. There are bright lines crossing like scars or scratches. At the bottom there are tiny dots that are little craters. I like the zigzag cut that separates the two images, like a lightning bolt, and that a little line says 5 km.
