What you would seeLo que verías

In the extreme foreground a stark black-and-white moonscape stretches across the entire bottom, pitted with craters, sharp shadows and granular rocky texture that suggests a close, curved horizon. Just above it, near the center, Jupiter dominates with its pale bands of beige, cream and soft grey-blue, larger than any other body. To its left floats Earth with vivid blue oceans and white swirling clouds, and below Earth a small reddish Mars. At the far left edge a pale greenish-blue planet is cropped by the frame. In the upper left, a large rust-orange Mars with dark markings hangs against black space, while near the top center a soft powder-blue Uranus hovers, with tiny ringed Saturn tilted nearby. To the right, a small deep-blue Neptune appears as a compact disc. Scattered on the right side and below Jupiter are four mottled moons in sandy, orange and grey tones, and at the upper right edge fragments of Earth’s Moon in grey peek into view. The background is split: deep black void on the left, and on the right a diffuse nebula rendered in false colors of brick red, moss green, ochre and burnt orange, with faint cloud-like wisps and tiny stars. The composition is a collage with no true scale, each sphere lit frontally to emphasize roundness and surface detail, creating a crowded, poster-like gathering of worlds.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the cratered lunar foreground and move up to Jupiter at the center, which anchors the scene. Then compare the unrealistic sizes, noticing how tiny Saturn looks next to Uranus, to see that scale is artistic. Finally look at the contrast between the empty black on the left and the colorful cloudy nebula on the right that wraps the outer planets.

ContextContexto

The image is a montage titled The New Solar System, dated November 6, 2000 and credited to NASA/JPL/ASU in the source data. According to the NASA description, it brings together the nine planets then recognized and Jupiter’s four large moons, set against a false-color view of the Rosette Nebula. It is a science outreach product combining photography and scientific imagery, not a single direct photograph of space. It reflects the understanding of the solar system before Pluto’s reclassification in 2006, so today it reads as a historical illustration of how the solar system was taught in the early 2000s.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Rosette Nebula in the background is a real cloud of gas and dust about 5,000 light-years away, shown here in false color to highlight structures invisible to the unaided eye in natural light.

  1. What effect does placing a close lunar surface beneath planets that are actually millions of miles apart have on you?¿Qué efecto produce mezclar una superficie lunar cercana con planetas que en realidad están a millones de kilómetros?
  2. Why do you think nine planets were shown in 2000 while today we count eight, and how does that change the story?¿Por qué crees que en el año 2000 se incluían nueve planetas y hoy los libros muestran ocho?
  3. How does seeing the solar system as a floating collage rather than a neat diagram alter your sense of space?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del sistema solar al verlo como un collage flotante en vez de un diagrama ordenado?

I focus on how this collage is built. In the foreground I recognize the lunar surface with its craters and grainy texture in black and white, serving as ground. Above it float the planets with frontal light that highlights their volume, from beige and cream Jupiter at the center to tiny Saturn with its tilted rings. In the background the deep black of space coexists with the Rosette Nebula in false reddish and greenish colors. It is a year 2000 outreach work that I preserve as a historical document.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is that here are the nine planets I learned as a kid, before Pluto was reclassified in 2006. I see Jupiter at the center with its bands, blue Earth with white clouds and rusty orange Mars at the top. I also spot pale sky-blue Uranus, deep blue Neptune and Saturn with rings. Below Jupiter appear the four mottled Galilean moons in sandy and gray tones. Everything is set against the Rosette Nebula, dated November 6, 2000 by NASA JPL ASU.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone cut out the planets and pasted them like stickers over space. At the bottom there is a rough Moon ground full of little holes, like sand with shadows. In the middle Jupiter looks huge with stripes and next to it Earth looks tiny and blue with little clouds. Up top there is an orange Mars and a Saturn with a little ring. I like that on one side the background is black with tiny stars and on the other side there is a cloud of red and green colors that looks like spongy paint.
