A vertical, nearly square satellite image with no horizon or human figures, showing territory seen directly from above like an abstract map. The upper half and the right third are dominated by an electric turquoise, almost flat, corresponding to ice; toward the right edge it opens into fine, curved, parallel streaks, like wood grain or combed tracks. At the center spreads a large reddish-brown patch with a grainy texture, pushing against the ice and forming an irregular front. Around it appear patches of intense orange, mustard yellow, and vivid green, rougher and mottled, with small black and blue dots scattered across them. Down the left side runs a narrow channel of dark blue, almost black water, widening toward the bottom and surrounding the land to the south, creating a sharp coastline and a small curved peninsula at the lower left corner. At the upper left are bluish and pinkish reliefs, with white crests and shadows suggesting snow-covered mountains. There are no shadows from an everyday scene and no human scale; the contrasts are artificial and highly saturated, so rivers, vegetation, and ice read like thick paint spread over a smooth surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the electric turquoise on the right and follow its fine, combed lines until they meet the brown mass at the center. Then look for the dark channel on the left and the coastline at the bottom: those edges restore the map-like geography. The small black and blue specks in the orange zone change the scale, reminding you that this abstraction covers tens of kilometers.

ContextContexto

According to NASA, this is an ASTER image from the Terra satellite, acquired on June 8, 2001, and catalogued on February 26, 2002. It covers 55 by 40 kilometers over the southwestern Malaspina Glacier and Icy Bay, Alaska. It is a composite of visible and infrared bands: snow and ice appear light blue, dense vegetation yellow-orange and green, and gravelly, sparsely vegetated ground orange. The source cites Dennis Trabant of the U.S. Geological Survey, who noted that the glacier is thinning and that its terminal moraine protects it from the open ocean. ASTER data help monitor some 15,000 glaciers in Alaska, most of which are retreating.

Curious detailDato curioso

ASTER records 14 spectral bands, from visible light to thermal infrared, with a spatial resolution of 15 to 90 meters, allowing changes invisible to the naked eye to be distinguished.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does our understanding of a glacier change when we see it in false color rather than in white and blue?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de un glaciar cuando lo vemos en falso color y no en blanco y azul?
  2. What does the moraine protect, and what could happen if sea level reconnected the glacier with the ocean?¿De qué protege la morrena al glaciar y qué podría pasar si el nivel del mar volviera a conectarlo con el océano?
  3. Can an image this abstract also function as evidence of climate change? What else would you need to confirm it?¿Puede una imagen tan abstracta servir también como evidencia del cambio climático? ¿Qué más necesitarías para confirmarlo?

From my workbench I love how this image reveals the invisible. It is not a natural photo, it is a composition of visible and infrared bands from the ASTER instrument. That electric turquoise is not paint, it is ice translated into color so we can read it. I linger on the thin curved stripes on the right, like wood grain, and on the large grainy brown patch pushing against the front. Everything is highly saturated, almost abstract, but it helps us monitor without touching, to preserve by looking from above.

I usually look up, and this is looking down with the same eyes. This 55 by 40 kilometer view was taken on June 8, 2001 by ASTER aboard the Terra satellite. There is no horizon because we see from directly overhead, like a map. Light blue is snow and ice, orange and green is dense vegetation, and the more solid orange is rocky areas. That dark blue channel on the left is real water bordering the coast. It is pure remote sensing, science that turns light into information to understand retreat.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant painting made with shiny play dough! At the top there is a lot of turquoise ice that looks like a frozen pool, with combed little lines like when you run your fingers through sand. In the middle there is a big reddish brown patch crashing into the ice, like mud pushing. At the bottom there is dark blue water making a little curve like a fingernail. And there are orange and green splotches everywhere. There are no people or houses, just super saturated colors seen from the sky, like a puzzle.
