The image is a circular polar projection map centered on the north pole of Mars, as if viewed from directly above its axis. It fills most of the frame against a white background. At the top the word «Hydrogen» appears, with a horizontal color bar beneath it ranging from dark purple-blue on the left, labeled «Low H», to intense red on the right, labeled «High H», transitioning through light blue, turquoise, green, yellow and orange. The circle is gridded with latitude lines marked 45, 60 and 75 degrees north, and longitude labels around the rim: 0 at the bottom, 60, 120, 180 at the top, -120, -60. The interior shows a mottled, diffuse texture like a thermal watercolor. The very center, the pole itself, glows in deep red and orange with an irregular, blotchy edge softened by yellow, indicating very high concentration. Surrounding it are rings of yellow-green, then green and turquoise toward the outer edge, with scattered warmer spots and a couple of bluish patches near the eastern and western limbs. There is no topographic relief or recognizable continents, only color gradients representing data invisible to the human eye, giving the image a flat, scientific yet hypnotic appearance with an almost radial symmetry.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the color bar at the top to learn the code, then let your eye drop to the intense red center at the pole. Notice that the red is not a perfect circle but an irregular blotch with yellow halos, and compare its intensity to the pale greens and blues at the edges to sense the difference between exposed surface ice and buried ice.

ContextContexto

This image is a gamma-ray spectrometer map of hydrogen at the Martian north pole from the Mars Odyssey mission, released on March 13, 2003 by NASA/JPL and the University of Arizona. The hydrogen detected is mainly in the form of water ice. Regions shown in red have high ice content and those in blue have low content. According to the source description, the very ice-rich red core corresponds to the permanent polar cap of water ice at the surface, while elsewhere the ice is buried under several to tens of centimeters of dry soil. The subsurface ice is not uniformly distributed but varies with latitude and longitude, and in the north the soil is over 50 percent ice by volume, suggesting thick deposits that may have been co-deposited with dust when conditions were wetter.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Gamma Ray Spectrometer on Mars Odyssey that produced this map detects hydrogen indirectly by measuring gamma rays emitted from the Martian soil when it is struck by cosmic rays, a method that can reveal ice a few inches below the surface without digging.

What captivates me about this piece is that it is not a photograph but a translation. The gamma ray spectrometer does not see colors, it counts hydrogen, and here we see it turned into a thermal watercolor. I look at the top bar that goes from dark purplish blue Low H to intense red High H and I understand how to read it. The saturated red core is not paint, it is the permanent polar cap of water ice exposed at the surface. The rest, with its mottled greens and turquoises, is ice buried under centimeters of dry soil. I am moved by that fragility of data made into image.

I always dream of looking at Mars through my telescope and seeing its white cap, but this map shows me what my eyes will never see. It is a top down view of the north pole, with latitudes marked at 45, 60 and 75 degrees and longitudes around the rim. The center glows red and orange because there hydrogen, meaning water ice, is concentrated and exposed. Outward the color fades to yellow, green and turquoise. It is the invisible ice, the one under the dust, detected by Mars Odyssey in 2003. Knowing there are soils with more than 50 percent ice makes me imagine future footprints there.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a candy planet seen from above. It is a big circle with rings like a dartboard and in the middle it has a red blot that looks like hot sauce. At the top it says Hydrogen and there is a little color bar that goes from purplish blue to red. My teacher told me red is where there is lots of hidden ice and blue is where there is very little. I like it because Mars looks like the Red Planet but here the pole looks like a warm heart. I imagine if you dig a little you find dirty snow under the ground and you could make a Martian snowman.
