What you would seeLo que verías
At the centre of a deep black field floats a luminous oval form, the spiral galaxy NGC 5962, seen slightly face-on with a gentle tilt. Its core is compact and warm, a creamy peach tone, surrounded by an irregular whitish halo speckled with pale bluish clumps that trace faint spiral arms. The light is not crisp but grainy and diffuse, like watercolour on damp paper, with fluffy edges that fade into darkness. The background is mottled with tiny specks of dark blue, burnt orange and white, which are other distant sources or sensor noise, and shows a grainy texture typical of a low-resolution ultraviolet frame. Toward the lower right, two or three more intense orange dots appear, with another similar one near the bottom left, contrasting with the cool blue of the main galaxy. The sense of scale conveys immensity and solitude: a single island of light suspended in an almost absolute void, with no nearby stars or frame, just that milky patch that seems to breathe softly.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the warm core and then slowly trace the bluish clumps around it; they are arms rich in young stars. Then notice the contrast between the milky softness of the galaxy and the speckled black background, that grain itself is part of the ultraviolet data.
ContextContexto
The image was taken on June 7, 2003, by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA and JPL / Caltech space telescope designed to observe the universe in ultraviolet light, and released on July 25, 2003. It shows the spiral galaxy NGC 5962, located about 90 million light-years from Earth according to the source data. The picture is a scientific false-colour composite that translates ultraviolet radiation, invisible to the human eye, into bluish and warm tones to reveal regions of star formation. No further details about the observation are given beyond what is published in the JPL Photojournal catalogue PIA04635.

Curious detailDato curioso
GALEX was so sensitive to ultraviolet light that it could detect a single ultraviolet photon arriving from billions of light-years away, allowing it to map how stars form in galaxies like this one.

- How does seeing a galaxy in ultraviolet change our idea of what a galaxy looks like?¿Qué cambia en nuestra idea de una galaxia al verla en ultravioleta en lugar de luz visible?
- Why can a blurry, grainy image be as scientifically valuable as a sharp one?¿Por qué una imagen borrosa o granulada puede tener tanto valor científico como una nítida?

What you see is not a pretty picture, it is a translation: ultraviolet light invisible to the eye became peachy cream at the center and pale blue in the outer clumps. I am interested in that grainy texture, like wet watercolor with spongy edges fading into black. The speckled background is intentionally not clean, it keeps sensor noise and little orange and blue flecks. My job would be not to erase that fragility, to respect the false color that makes star formation visible without inventing sharpness where there is none.

This is NGC 5962, a spiral about 90 million light years away photographed by GALEX on June 7, 2003 and released by NASA on July 25 that year. We see it as an oval slightly tilted, with a compact creamy core and a whitish halo dotted with pale blue clumps that are its arms. In ultraviolet those blues reveal young stars. I love the deep black background with just two or three orange dots at the lower right, reminding us that this island of light is alone in an enormous void.

It looks like a stain of milk with peach in the middle floating alone in the dark, as if someone blew watercolor onto black paper. Around it there are little pale blue bits like cold sparkles. The background is all black but if you look closely you see tiny colored dots, orange and blue, like lost crumbs. It makes me feel a little lonely but also calm, because that spongy light seems to breathe slowly and is not in a hurry, it is just there shining very far away.
