What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a circular, deep field of the sky set against a velvety black background, speckled with hundreds of luminous dots. Visually prominent in the foreground are several elongated, diffuse galaxies in whitish, bluish and pale golden tones; some appear edge-on like slender spindles, others are more oval and bright. Toward the left, two tilted galaxies display a yellowish core and a faint halo, while near the bottom center a thin, vertical galaxy stands out for its bluish whiteness. Scattered around are small yellow, white and blue specks that are distant stars and fainter galaxies. The composition suggests great depth, with layers of light of varying intensity and size. The light is point-like and high-contrast, without shadows, typical of a space capture. The overall texture is grainy from the stellar field, but the galaxies look soft and cottony. The circular field has an irregular dark edge, as if seen through an eyepiece, leaving empty black corners outside the circle.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the black void and notice how it fills with tiny dots. Pause on the elongated, soft-edged galaxies and compare their cool bluish color with the warm yellow points around them; that contrast reveals different populations and immense scales.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is an ultraviolet image taken by NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) space telescope, dated May 5, 2005, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/SSC. It shows a small area of the Virgo Cluster, the nearest massive galaxy cluster to the Milky Way, about 54 million light-years away. GALEX surveyed the sky in ultraviolet to study star formation. The source does not identify individual galaxies visible in the field, so none are named here. The work is categorized as scientific photography and imagery from the JPL collection.

Curious detailDato curioso
GALEX, launched in 2003, mapped the sky in ultraviolet light for a decade and made it possible to spot galaxies with active star formation by their strong blue glow in this wavelength, invisible to the human eye.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I am fascinated by how this image preserves light from millions of years ago without retouching that would hide its origin. I look at the deep velvety black background and the galaxies with soft cottony halos that seem fragile. The grainy texture of the ultraviolet reveals layers of brightness and wear from light traveling so far. I wonder how to preserve this data without losing the stellar noise that is also valuable information for the future.

What excites me most is knowing I am looking at invisible light turned into colors I can actually see. This view from the GALEX telescope on May 5 2005 shows a tiny patch of the Virgo Cluster 54 million light years away, the closest massive cluster to us. I can pick out edge-on galaxies like thin spindles and more oval ones with yellowish cores, all floating inside a circular field cropped like a view through an eyepiece. Every little dot is a distant world and reminds me why I love watching the sky.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like someone sprinkled shiny glitter over black cardboard. I see lots of little lights in white, blue and gold, some big and oval shaped and others tiny like magic dust. There are three galaxies that look like little sticks lying down and one standing up like a pencil. The circle in the middle shines a lot and the corners are dark as if I were peeking through a toy telescope. I want to count all the speckles and travel among them.

If you look closely at the lower center of the circular image, what shape does the whitest and most bluish galaxy there have?
HintPista
Look near the bottom edge of the circle for a very white light with a blue tint that is stretched tall.
