What you would seeLo que verías

A grid of twelve black-and-white photographs arranged in four rows and three columns against a deep black background, separated by thin white lines. Each frame shows the planet Mercury in gibbous phase, lit from the left, receding steadily from the viewer. In the top row the planet fills almost the entire frame, revealing a heavily cratered surface with plains and a prominent bright ray system radiating from a crater near the upper edge. Moving downward, the planetary disk becomes progressively smaller and more distant, occupying only the center of the frame in the bottom row. The surface is granular and mottled, ranging from brilliant white to charcoal gray, with sharp shadows along the terminator. The contrast between the textured, pockmarked world and the absolute blackness of space is stark. No stars or other bodies are visible. The sequence conveys motion, scale and cosmic solitude through quiet, systematic repetition.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the sequence from top to bottom and left to right as if watching the planet drift away. First notice the bright rayed crater at the top, then see how surface detail fades as the disk shrinks into darkness.

ContextContexto

According to source data, these images were taken on January 29, 2008 by the Narrow Angle Camera (NAC), part of the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) aboard NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft after its first successful flyby of Mercury. The spacecraft was developed by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and the Carnegie Institution of Washington for NASA. MESSENGER was the first mission to orbit Mercury, mapping its surface and studying its composition and magnetic field. The series shows the planet as it receded from the spacecraft, so its apparent size decreases frame by frame.

Curious detailDato curioso

MESSENGER performed three flybys of Mercury before entering orbit in 2011, and during its mission it found evidence of water ice inside permanently shadowed craters at the planet's poles.

I pause on the white grid that separates the twelve images, it is a mounting choice that lets us compare. Notice how the planet goes from filling the frame to becoming a small distant disk, it is the visual proof of moving away. In black and white the grays reveal texture, from the bright white of the impact rays to the charcoal gray of the shadows at the terminator. I am interested in how the sequence preserves the contrast between the grainy surface and the absolute black background with no stars.

What we see are twelve photos taken on January 29, 2008 by the Narrow Angle Camera of the MESSENGER probe, right after its first flyby of Mercury. They are arranged in four rows and three columns and from top to bottom you can read the departure, the gibbous phase disk lit from the left becomes smaller and smaller. At the top the craters are very clear and that ray system radiating from near the upper edge stands out, it is a recent impact mark that is highly visible.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like Mercury is running away! In the first photo it is huge and I can see its little holes and a white starburst on top which are the rays from a crater. In each photo below it gets smaller, as if it were running into the black background to hide. There are twelve little squares with white lines in between, like a window with many panes. I like that it is alone in the dark space and that the light always hits it from the left side, as if someone were shining a lamp on it.
