What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a digital montage set against a deep black background speckled with tiny white stars. Arranged diagonally from lower left to upper right, celestial bodies are shown enlarged and overlapping. In the foreground at the bottom, Mercury appears as a small grey cratered sphere, Venus as an ochre orange mottled orb, Earth vivid in blue oceans, white clouds and green-brown continents beside its grey cratered Moon, and Mars in dusty reddish brown with white polar caps. Dominating the center is Jupiter with creamy beige and brown atmospheric bands and the well defined Great Red Spot swirling near its limb. Behind it, Saturn glows pale yellow with its tilted translucent rings in soft grey and gold. Further back, Neptune and Uranus appear as smooth spheres in intense blue and paler blue green with faint wispy bands, Uranus with thin delicate rings. To the left the Sun shines as a bright starburst with white and lilac rays. In the lower right corner a comet with a glowing tail and two irregular rocky asteroids float above the starfield. Lighting is artificial, high contrast and illustrative, with textures mimicking real photographic detail.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the Sunburst on the left and follow the diagonal chain of planets toward the blue ice giants in the back. Linger on Jupiter at the center and compare its swirling bands to Saturn translucent rings crossing in front. Then notice the small comet and asteroids at the bottom right, which shift the sense of scale and remind that the solar system is more than planets.

ContextContexto

The source describes this as an artist conception of a solar system montage of the eight planets, a comet and an asteroid, credited to NASA/JPL and dated July 21, 2008, from the NASA Image and Video Library. It is a scientific outreach image made with digital illustration and photographic techniques, not a single telescope photograph. It reflects the current eight planet solar system after Pluto was reclassified in 2006. The montage combines known visual data for each world to show relative sizes and characteristic colors in an educational way. No individual artist is named. It was likely created for public outreach and science communication.

Curious detailDato curioso

This montage shows eight planets because Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, two years before the image was released, so it is no longer included among the main planets.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does it feel to see Earth looking so small next to Jupiter and Saturn?¿Cómo te hace sentir ver a la Tierra tan pequeña junto a Júpiter y Saturno?
  2. Why do you think the artist arranged the planets diagonally instead of in a straight line?¿Por qué crees que el artista ordenó los planetas en diagonal y no en línea recta?
  3. What does the inclusion of the comet and asteroids tell you about what belongs to the solar system?¿Qué te dice la presencia del cometa y los asteroides sobre lo que consideramos parte del Sistema Solar?

I pause on the texture of this 2008 digital montage by NASA/JPL. It is not a telescope photograph, it is an illustration that gathers visual data from each planet to teach sizes and colors. Notice the contrast between the deep black background and the artificial glows, the Sun flare on the left, the translucent rings of Saturn. I wonder how these pixels have been preserved so Jupiter still shows its Great Red Spot so sharply.

What a beautifully ordered parade! Here you see the eight planets recognized after Pluto was reclassified in 2006, aligned diagonally. At the bottom are the rocky ones, Mercury, Venus, Earth with its Moon, and reddish Mars with its white polar caps. In the center reigns Jupiter with its beige and brown bands, then Saturn with its tilted rings, and in the back the ice giants, greenish-blue Uranus and deep-blue Neptune. And in the corner, a comet with a tail and two asteroids.

It looks like the planets are lining up for a group photo! I love Earth because it looks blue with little white clouds and its tiny friend the Moon right beside it. Jupiter is gigantic and has a huge red spot like a beauty mark. Saturn wears its rings like a shiny hat. The Sun shines brightly on the left and in the back there are tiny stars and a comet with a little tail. I want to count them all one by one so I do not miss any!
