What you would seeLo que verías

The square image is dominated by an almost completely black background, sprinkled with hundreds of luminous points and patches of very different sizes. There is no horizon and no earthly foreground: everything seems to lie at an immense distance and, at the same time, to be flattened onto a single plane. Left of center, an elongated, tilted, golden-yellow galaxy stands out beside a very bright blue-white star that forms a cross of light with four long spikes and small green and reddish glints. Scattered around it are whitish spiral galaxies with curved arms, soft cream-colored ellipses, and small orange, red, and blue ovals. Some are clearly defined disks; others are barely blurry flecks, almost grains. The light does not illuminate a scene — each object shines on its own against the darkness, with edges that are sometimes sharp and sometimes diffuse. A slightly grainy texture runs through the image, typical of a picture gathered from very little light. Brighter sources also appear near the edges, such as an orange point at lower left and a luminous ellipse at right. Scale is deceptive here: the smallest thing may be the farthest away. Looking slowly, you discover pairs, chance alignments, and tiny shapes that nearly merge with the background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the darkness, not the lights: that black background is what makes the depth visible. Then find the bright star with the cross-shaped spikes near the center and compare it with the fuzzy galaxies around it. Finally, look at the tiniest specks — the detail that changes the reading is that almost none of this is empty space.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is the Hubble Deep Field, an image made with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope by the NASA/JPL/STScI Hubble Deep Field Team and released on January 15, 1996. The source describes it as the deepest view of the universe made up to that time, with several hundred previously unseen galaxies. The telescope was pointed for days at a tiny patch of sky that had seemed nearly empty, in order to record extremely faint and distant galaxies. It is a scientific photograph, not an artist's rendering; what its colors and brightness represent depends on the filters and processing used.

Curious detailDato curioso

The patch of sky recorded in this image is tiny: NASA often compares it to the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length, yet it contains hundreds of galaxies.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it do to our sense of scale to know that almost every speck in this image is an entire galaxy?¿Qué le pasa a nuestra idea de la escala al saber que casi cada mota de esta imagen es una galaxia entera?
  2. How does the black background change the feeling of the image — does it read as emptiness or as fullness?¿Cómo cambia el fondo negro la sensación de la imagen: se lee como vacío o como plenitud?
  3. What difference does it make to you that this is a scientific photograph and not a painting of the universe?¿Qué diferencia hace para ti que esto sea una fotografía científica y no una pintura del universo?

What fascinates me is not just what you see, but how it was made visible. This square image has a slightly grainy texture, a sign it was captured in very low light over many days while pointing at a patch of sky that looked empty. The almost black background is not emptiness, it is information waiting to be revealed. The creamy, golden and bluish tones are not paint: they depend on filters and scientific processing. Every sharp or soft edge, every blurry speck, speaks of the work to preserve an extremely faint and distant light.

Take your time and get lost, in a good way. There is no up or down, just a black background speckled with hundreds of galaxies. Near the center-left you will see an elongated, tilted golden galaxy, very close to a whitish-blue star with four long spikes forming a cross. Around them are whitish spirals, creamy ellipses and tiny orange, red and blue ovals. The tricky part is scale: the smallest and blurriest specks may be the farthest, perhaps from when the universe was very young. Everything shines on its own.

It looks like someone sprinkled glitter on the darkness! There are little dots everywhere, some big and some so tiny you can barely see them. My favorite is the star that looks like it has a shiny cross with green and reddish sparkles, like magic. Next to it there is a golden galaxy like a tilted slice of bread. I like to think each light is a galaxy full of stars. If you look closely, you find more and more, and you feel like space never ends.
