What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents a vast cosmic cloud stretched horizontally across the blackness of space, speckled with thousands of tiny stars in white, pale blue and amber. Near the center-left, a brilliant core glows in pearly pink and soft white, surrounded by a diffuse halo that radiates outward like a luminous heart or eye. From this hub, elongated wings unfurl made of delicate filaments of gas and dust in emerald green, ochre, smoky brown and muted turquoise, with textures resembling slow-moving smoke, frayed cotton or gentle breaking waves. The right wing forms a long, thin arch that curves downward and ends in a denser, brighter knot at the lower right edge. The left wing is shorter and more fragmented, with ragged, feathery borders. Darker, denser clouds linger in the upper background with bluish tones, contrasting with intense red spots scattered throughout that mark compact star-forming pockets. The light is soft and diffused without harsh shadows, characteristic of infrared imaging, which unveils structures invisible to the human eye and gives the whole nebula an ethereal, translucent and dusty appearance.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First trace the full gull silhouette from wingtip to wingtip to grasp its span. Then linger on the pink core at the center and see how its glow tints the surrounding green filaments. Finally notice the tiny intense red dots: stellar nurseries that shift the sense of scale across the whole scene.

ContextContexto

This is an infrared mosaic taken by NASA Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), released on May 20, 2010 and credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA. It shows the Seagull Nebula, named for its resemblance to a gull in flight, located on the border of Monoceros and Canis Major near Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, hence the subtitle «Running with the Big Dog». It is a star-forming region where interstellar gas and dust are illuminated by hot young stars. Infrared light penetrates dust and reveals the thermal structure of the cloud. No further specific historical details are provided in the source.

De ahí el subtítulo original «Running with the Big Dog».

Curious detailDato curioso

WISE surveyed the entire sky in infrared with sensitivity a thousand times greater than the earlier IRAS mission, and this view is part of that all-sky atlas which uncovered millions of objects hidden behind cosmic dust.

  1. What makes you see a seagull in a cloud of gas thousands of light years away and what does that reveal about pattern recognition?¿Qué te hace reconocer una gaviota en una nube de gas a miles de años luz y qué dice eso sobre cómo vemos formas familiares?
  2. How does your reading of the image change knowing the colors are a translation of invisible heat rather than true colors?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la imagen al saber que los colores no son reales sino una traducción del calor invisible?
  3. What connection do you imagine between the bright central glow and the dark filaments stretching out like wings?¿Qué relación imaginas entre el brillo intenso del centro y los filamentos oscuros que se extienden como alas?

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my craft I am fascinated by how WISE infrared reveals what the eye cannot see: interstellar dust as veils in emerald, ochre and smoky browns, the pearly pink core that looks like a glowing heart and filaments fraying like old cotton. This soft diffuse light without harsh shadows shows the thermal and fragile structure of the cloud. It makes me think about the patience of preserving the ephemeral, because each filament is delicate matter slowly transformed over time by the radiation of young hot stars.

Whenever I look for Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, I remember that very close by is this cosmic seagull between Monoceros and Canis Major, the Big Dog from the original title Running with the Big Dog. I love that this infrared mosaic from the WISE telescope, published in May 2010, lets us see through the dust and watch a stellar nursery in action. The bright core and the two extended wings, one longer to the right, are gas lit by young hot stars. It is science and poetry at once, a cloud that looks like a bird flying in absolute darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I can totally see the seagull flying sideways, with its two giant wings made of colorful smoke. Its belly is a shiny pink heart that looks like an eye staring at us, surrounded by thousands of tiny stars like glitter on black sky. One wing is super long and reaches a little ball of light, the other is shorter and messy. I like to imagine it is running with a huge doggy, the Big Dog Canis Major, leaving behind little red sparkles that are baby stars being born inside the dust.
