What you would seeLo que verías
A nearly square image shows deep space filled edge to edge, with no horizon, frame, or foreground object. The background is black, almost navy in places, densely sprinkled with hundreds of small stars, most of them electric blue, with a few in white, pale pink, copper, and dull red. Slightly right of center burns the brightest area: an irregular knot of white and pale yellow light surrounded by orange, amber, and rust, like a glowing ember diffused through smoke. From that core, thin, translucent filaments of gas spread outward, especially toward the right and downward, in muted reds and browns. A second, elongated zone of bright clusters runs diagonally across the lower left, with several golden-white cores wrapped in orange haze. Across the upper half and around the edges drift veils of green and teal nebulosity, darker and more transparent, with a cloudy, almost fibrous texture. The contrast is striking: the stars are tiny, sharp points, while the nebula is soft, blotchy, and layered, suggesting clouds at different depths. There is no single clear shape, but the central glow draws the eye first and the green wisps give the faint, unsettling impression of legs or threads extending into darkness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the blinding knot at the center, then trace the wispy filaments outward as if following threads in a web. Next, look for the chain of bright clusters in the lower left and compare its diffuse light with the sharp, pinprick stars. The green clouds that seem to recede are what give the flat black sky its sense of depth.
ContextContexto
This image was released on July 6, 2010, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA and drawn from the NASA Image and Video Library. It was taken by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, known as WISE, a space telescope that mapped the sky in infrared light. Its subject is the Tarantula Nebula, also known as 30 Doradus, a vast cloud of gas and dust in the Large Magellanic Cloud. According to the source, it is the largest known star-forming region in the entire Local Group of galaxies. Because it records infrared rather than visible light, its colors are a scientific translation, not what a human eye would see.

Curious detailDato curioso
WISE observed in infrared wavelengths invisible to the eye, so the greens, oranges, and blues in this picture are assigned colors used to make heat and different wavelengths readable as an image.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I am fascinated that this image is not a straight photograph but a translation of infrared light. WISE, which mapped the sky in infrared, turns the invisible into layers of color so we can read it. I see translucent filaments and fibrous green veils overlapping, with a white and pale yellow core surrounded by orange and amber like an ember glowing. Each hue marks a different temperature and depth, like delicate varnishes I must imagine without touching, because the dust and gas can never be touched.

What excites me is that WISE does not see like our eyes, it sees heat. This view from July 6, 2010 shows 30 Doradus, the Tarantula, in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the largest stellar nursery in the Local Group. The white and golden glow slightly to the right of center is where hundreds of massive stars are being born, and the green veils at the top are cold dust clouds. I keep hunting for the electric blue dots, each one a distant sun shining through the cosmic haze.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like someone lit a campfire in space and the smoke turned green. The center glows super bright, like a white ember with orange around it, and from there thin red threads stretch downward like spider legs. Up above there are see-through green clouds floating and everywhere there are tiny blue stars sprinkling like glitter. It gives me little tingles to think it is a giant tarantula hiding in the darkness, but really pretty.
