What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a deep, velvety black field floats a large face-on spiral galaxy that dominates the frame. Its core is a compact, luminous oval of pearly white light with a pinkish glow, from which two main arms unwind in a broad, slightly asymmetric spiral. Those arms are not solid but a delicate filigree of reddish filaments in crimson, ruby and magenta, like threads of a cosmic spider web or lace, dotted with brighter knots where young stars cluster. Between the filaments there are dark gaps and grayish hazy areas that give a sense of depth and suspended dust. The whole formation swirls counterclockwise with a grainy, nebulous texture. The background is speckled with hundreds of tiny points of light: foreground stars from our own Milky Way appearing as bluish and white spheres, some with a small cross-shaped diffraction spike. Near the bottom center a particularly bright, sharp star stands out, white with a pale blue halo, with smaller ones scattered along the edges. The light is cool and high-contrast, the red of the galaxy vibrates against the black of the void, creating a feeling at once ethereal and organic, like watching a luminous jellyfish drifting in darkness.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the bright core and follow one of the red filaments outward, noticing how it branches like a net. Then consider the contrast between the warm web of the distant galaxy and the cold field of sharp blue dots that are actually much closer stars in our own galaxy.

ContextContexto

The image shows galaxy IC 342, nicknamed the Hidden Galaxy because it lies behind the dust of our Milky Way, captured in infrared light by NASA Spitzer Space Telescope. According to source data from 2011, the reddish structure traces the dust lanes in its spiral arms. Credit is NASA/JPL-Caltech via the NASA Image and Video Library. IC 342 is a spiral galaxy about 11 million light-years away in the constellation Camelopardalis, difficult to observe in visible light. The infrared view penetrates the veil of dust to reveal its web-like pattern.

Curious detailDato curioso

IC 342 is called the Hidden Galaxy because although it is one of the nearest bright spirals, it is obscured by the galactic equator and only infrared telescopes like Spitzer can fully reveal its structure.

I pause at the fragility of this cosmic spiderweb. What you see in red and magenta is not paint, it is dust tracing the arms like threads of lace suspended over black velvet. The pearly pinkish core looks compact and luminous, but what moves me is how Spitzer’s infrared light pierced the veil hiding it to reveal that filigree. Between the filaments there are dark voids, suspended dust, and bright knots of young stars that give the whole spiral its granular, delicate texture.

This is IC 342, the Hidden Galaxy, and you can see why. It lies about 11 million light years away in Camelopardalis, right behind the dust of our own Milky Way, so it is almost invisible in visible light. This 2011 view from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope uses infrared to see through that veil. The reddish glow is cosmic dust tracing two main spiral arms. Those tiny blue and white dots do not belong to it, they are foreground stars from our galaxy, some showing that little cross-shaped diffraction spike.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant jellyfish floating in the dark. It has a center that shines like a pearl and from there come arms that are like red and pink spiderwebs with sparkles where stars are born. I like that it is not perfect, it has little dark holes as if someone blew dust around. Everything sits on a black background full of tiny stars. At the bottom center there is a super bright star, white with a blue halo, that looks like a diamond watching over the galaxy.
