What you would seeLo que verías
In the upper left foreground, the Voyager 1 spacecraft floats in detailed rendering: a gold and black body, a white dish antenna facing inward, and long thin booms extending diagonally. Its silhouette stands out against a soft, diffuse orange glow suggesting the inner heliosphere. Immediately behind the probe stretches a curved, granular band densely speckled in bluish green, labeled «Heliosheath». A thick white arrow points outward from that band toward the interstellar medium. Near the center, a second arched, semi-transparent band marks the «Termination Shock» with white diagonal lettering. The deep background is a very dark navy blue, sprinkled with fine whitish dots that simulate the interstellar environment. At the lower right, tiny in scale, the Sun glows pale yellow, surrounded by concentric white ellipses representing planetary orbits. A long faint line connects the Sun to Voyager, emphasizing the vast distance traveled. The composition is diagrammatic and enveloping, with concentric curves leading the eye from the small Sun outward to the spacecraft at the edge.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with Voyager 1 in the upper corner and follow the white arrow outward into the speckled darkness. Notice the contrast between the warm orange interior and the deep blue exterior. Observe the thin line linking the tiny Sun to the probe to grasp the scale of the journey.
ContextContexto
This is an artist concept released by NASA/JPL-Caltech on December 16, 2011, held in the NASA Image and Video Library. According to its source description, it shows NASA Voyager 1 in a new region at the edge of our solar system where there are fewer low-energy particles originating from inside the solar system. It belongs to the scientific visualization of the Voyager mission, launched in 1977 to explore the outer planets and later continue into interstellar space. The labels «Heliosheath» and «Termination Shock» denote structures of the heliosphere. No further details about the artistic creation process are provided beyond the institutional credit.

Curious detailDato curioso
Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object from Earth and, according to NASA, officially entered interstellar space in 2012, shortly after this 2011 illustration anticipated the drop in solar particles.

I pause to see how this 2011 image from NASA/JPL-Caltech makes the invisible visible. The Voyager 1 probe, with its gold and black body and white dish antenna, floats sharply against an orange glow that suggests the heliosphere. Behind it I notice the grainy green-blue band labeled Heliosheath and, closer to the center, the semi-transparent curve of the Termination Shock. I am interested in the contrast between the realistic detail of the spacecraft and the diagrammatic background in deep navy blue.

This view excites me because it sums up the journey of Voyager 1, launched in 1977 and already at the edge of the solar system in 2011. I see the tiny Sun at the bottom right with its white concentric orbits and a long pale line connecting it to the probe at the top left. The thick white arrow leaving the Heliosheath shows movement toward interstellar space. It is a brilliant way to show on a cosmic scale where exploration had taken us.

It looks like Voyager is in a race outward! I see it in gold with its big white dish pointing back, as if it is waving goodbye to the tiny Sun that is far far away. I like the two giant curves that look like waves, one says Heliosheath with green dots and the other says Termination Shock. And there is a huge white arrow that says this way to space! The dark blue background is full of white speckles that look like stars.
