What you would seeLo que verías

Set against a deep black background, the image is split into two floating horizontal diagrams. At the top, the Kepler-69 System: a small bright star at the center, encircled by two thin yellow elliptical orbits and a broad translucent green band labeled Habitable Zone. Two fine yellow leader lines connect the orbits to two rendered planets in the foreground, on the left and center. The smaller one, 69c, shows mottled blue and white tones suggesting oceans and clouds, much like Earth. The other, 69b, is larger, in uniform brown-beige with soft streaks and a hazy atmosphere. Below, on the right, the four inner planets of the Solar System — Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars — appear to scale, lined up from tiny to medium, with familiar textures: Mercury's cratered gray, Venus's pearly white, Earth's vivid blue, and Mars's reddish ochre. Beneath them, another set of concentric orbits in pale cyan surrounds a tiny sun, also with a green habitable zone. In the lower left corner, small gray text reads Planets and orbits to scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the two orbital systems and their green bands, then compare the size and color of the six planets in the foreground. Notice how the line linking each planet to its orbit helps you grasp scale and distance.

ContextContexto

A diagram released on April 18, 2013 by NASA / Ames / JPL-Caltech and hosted on the NASA Image and Video Library. It compares the inner planets of the Solar System with the Kepler-69 system, located about 2,700 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. Kepler-69 is a Sun-like star with two confirmed planets: Kepler-69b and Kepler-69c. At the time of publication, Kepler-69c attracted particular interest for orbiting near the edge of the habitable zone. The image is an educational science illustration, not a direct photograph, created from data from the Kepler mission.

  1. What does the illustrated color and size of a planet tell us about what we actually know about it?¿Qué nos dice el color y tamaño de un planeta ilustrado sobre lo que realmente sabemos de él?
  2. Why is the habitable zone shown as a green ring and what are the limits of that concept?¿Por qué la zona habitable se representa como un anillo verde y qué límites tiene esa idea?
  3. How does seeing our Solar System as one among many change your perception of it?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de nuestro Sistema Solar al verlo como uno más entre otros?

The conservatorLa restauradora

From a conservation perspective I focus on how this diagram communicates without photographing anything real. Against the deep black background, the yellow orbits and the translucent green band of the habitable zone are drawn with a clean, didactic intent. I am interested in how the two Kepler-69 planets are rendered in the foreground to contrast textures: the mottled blue and white of 69c versus the hazy beige of 69b, and how below Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are aligned with their recognizable surfaces, all to scale and with discreet typography.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me here is the to-scale comparison between the familiar and the distant. At the top we see Kepler-69, a Sun-like star about 2,700 light years away in Cygnus, with its two confirmed worlds, 69b and 69c, and that green band marking where liquid water might exist. Below are our four inner planets, from Mercury to Mars, with their orbits in light blue. It reminds me of 2013, when 69c thrilled us for grazing the edge of the habitable zone, even though today we know interpreting it requires caution.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a game of finding twins of the Solar System! At the top there is a little shiny star with two yellow paths around it and a green area that is like the spot where it is not too cold or too hot. One planet is blue with little clouds like Earth and the other is brownish and hazy. Below are tiny gray Mercury, whitish Venus, our blue Earth and reddish Mars, all lined up in a row. I like to imagine we travel from one diagram to the other as if they were two floating courts.
