What you would seeLo que verías

The image is square and is dominated by a deep black, slightly grainy field crowded with hundreds of tiny points of light. Running diagonally from the lower-left toward the upper-right, across the exact center, is a very long, thin, bright streak: an almost straight line of blue-white light with a warmer, yellowish glow concentrated near its middle. Its surface looks powdery and mottled, as if made of countless unresolved stars, brighter and denser in the center and fading toward the ends. The upper end bends slightly and becomes dimmer and more diffuse, like a fine brushstroke lifting off. Around it, the background is sprinkled with small white, bluish, and golden stars; some are mere pinpricks, while others, such as those at the right, lower-left, and bottom, appear as round, fuzzy yellow-orange orbs with soft halos. Two other small, pale, tilted oval galaxies are visible, one above the main line and another smaller one toward the top. There is no horizon, ground, human figure, or familiar scale: the sense of immensity comes only from the contrast between the central needle of light and the dense darkness surrounding it.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the long diagonal line at the center and notice how thin it looks for a whole galaxy. Then look at its slightly fainter, bent upper tip and at its warmer central glow. Finally, step back: the smaller galaxies and golden stars give a sense of depth and make the main form stop looking like a scratch and read as an enormous structure seen from the side.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a scientific image credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech, dated June 28, 2013, from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer, held in the NASA Image and Video Library. It shows NGC 4565, described by the source as one of the nearest and brightest galaxies not included in the famous list by 18th-century comet hunter Charles Messier. In general terms, NGC 4565 is a spiral galaxy seen almost exactly edge-on, which is why its disk appears as a narrow line. The spacecraft and instrument details for this specific exposure are not given in the supplied data.

Curious detailDato curioso

NGC 4565 is often nicknamed the Needle Galaxy because, seen edge-on, its disk looks extremely thin compared with the many spiral galaxies photographed face-on.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does our perception of a galaxy change when we see it edge-on rather than face-on?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción de una galaxia cuando la vemos de canto y no de frente?
  2. What does the slightly bent tip of the central line suggest about the history or environment of this galaxy?¿Qué sugiere la punta ligeramente doblada de la línea central sobre la historia o el entorno de esta galaxia?
  3. How do the tiny background galaxies help us imagine distances that no human scale can represent?¿Cómo nos ayudan las galaxias diminutas del fondo a imaginar distancias que ninguna escala humana puede representar?

I focus on the surface of this square image and how its light ages. The deep, grainy black dominates everything and holds that thin streak crossing from the lower left edge to the upper right. I notice the contrast between the bluish white at the ends and the warm yellow at the center, denser and speckled like star dust. I worry about the upper tip that bends and fades, so fragile, and those orange orbs with soft halos at the edges that look like lifted varnish.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is recognizing NGC 4565 seen almost exactly edge-on, which is why it looks like a needle of light. According to the record it is a nearby bright spiral galaxy that did not make Messier's list, photographed on June 28, 2013 by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer. I keep looking at how the disk thins toward the tips and how the yellowish bulge at the center marks its heart. The two small oval galaxies above remind me we are looking very deep.

It looks like someone drew a bright line on the black sky with a marker that is running out. It goes a bit crooked from one corner to the other and in the middle it glows more yellow, as if lots of fireflies gathered there. The little tip on top bends like a cat's tail. Around it there are tiny colored dots and some blurry orange balls that look like marbles. I like counting little stars and thinking that streak is a skinny galaxy like a pencil.
