First Asteroid Image from the Surface of MarsPrimera imagen de asteroides desde la superficie de Marte

What you would seeLo que verías
The image is an almost square frame dominated by a very grainy black background, like a night photograph full of digital noise or extremely fine sand spread across the whole surface. No ground, horizon, or Martian landscape is visible: only darkness and tiny points. In the upper left there is a very short white mark, like a comma or a small tilted streak, next to the word “Vesta” in white letters. On the right, at mid-height, another barely perceptible mark sits beside the label “Ceres.” Toward the center-right, three thin white lines converge on the word “Stars” and point to three faint vertical traces, almost lost in the grain. At the lower right is a perfect black circle, darker than the background, with a bright white dot at its center; below it reads “Deimos.” Along the left edge are three stacked black insets: the first shows “Phobos,” a gray, irregular, rough body like a potato lit from one side; the second, “Jupiter,” is only a white dot on black; the third, “Saturn,” repeats an even lonelier dot. Light is scarce, contrasts are extreme, and everything feels tiny against the dark immensity.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the darkness and the grain, not with the labels, and notice how little can actually be seen. Then follow each label and compare the bright dot of Deimos with the almost invisible streaks of Ceres and Vesta. The side insets change the reading: what looks like emptiness is in fact a map of distant bodies sharing the same Martian sky.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is the first image of asteroids taken from the surface of Mars, released on April 24, 2014, and credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/Texas A&M, from the work of NASA's Curiosity rover. It identifies the asteroids Ceres and Vesta, and this version also includes Deimos, one of Mars's two moons. The side insets also show Phobos, Jupiter, and Saturn, although the source does not explain their scale or whether they come from the same exposure. Today Ceres is also often classified as a dwarf planet; Vesta is one of the largest bodies in the asteroid belt.

Curious detailDato curioso
Ceres and Vesta, the two faint streaks in this Martian sky, were also the two destinations of NASA's Dawn mission, which studied Vesta in 2011-2012 and arrived at Ceres in 2015.

- What does it mean to photograph the sky from another planet rather than from Earth?¿Qué cambia cuando el cielo se fotografía desde otro planeta y no desde la Tierra?
- How do the labels change our perception of marks we might otherwise overlook?¿Cómo modifican los rótulos nuestra percepción de unas marcas que casi no se ven?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the grain of this deep black, almost like digital sand covering the whole frame. There is no Martian landscape to preserve, only darkness and fragile dots labeled in English: Vesta at the top left, Ceres on the right, three faint little stars marked as Stars and, below, Deimos as a dark circle with a bright dot. The three insets of Phobos, Jupiter and Saturn make me wonder about their scale, since the record notes we do not know if they come from the same exposure.

What excites me is that Curiosity pointed its camera up from Mars and captured this on April 24 2014: seeing Ceres and Vesta, two giants of the asteroid belt, from another planet. Vesta is just a tiny white streak at the top, Ceres a dot on the right, and the Stars are three vertical traces lost in the noise. Below, Deimos shines inside its black circle, and on the left the insets give us Phobos looking rough like a potato, plus Jupiter and Saturn as lonely dots on a black background.

This picture makes me a little scared and super curious because everything is black with tiny dots like when you do not clean the screen well. At the top it says Vesta and it is a little white comma, on the other side is Ceres that you can barely see, and near the middle there are three little sticks that say Stars. Down below there is a black circle with a shiny dot that is Deimos. Next to it there are three black boxes: one has a gray potato that is Phobos, and the other two just have a single dot that are Jupiter and Saturn all alone.
