The square image is dominated by an enormous portion of the Sun, occupying almost the entire frame from the left edge to a luminous curve on the right. The full disk is not visible: the star extends beyond the top, bottom, and left sides, and only its right limb can be followed, set against the black background of space in the lower right corner. Tones of gold, ochre, brown, and amber cover a turbulent surface of swirls, filaments, arcs, and grainy, cloud-like textures. In the upper left, bright, almost-white loops twist like smoke or fine hair. Slightly right of center, a saturated white flash bursts outward in an irregular star shape with short points. A very thin vertical white line cuts through it from top to bottom, extending beyond the solar disk. Diagonal beams with stepped, barred patterns also radiate from the burst. On the right limb there is a second, smaller bright focus with wispy rays. A diffuse halo softens the edge of the Sun, while dark, nearly black patches appear in the lower left. In small white type at the bottom left is the timestamp: 2017-09-06T11:59:04.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the thin vertical line to the blinding center and notice how that line extends beyond the Sun itself. Then look at the right limb, where a second, smaller glow appears, and compare it with the swirls across the surface. The darkest patches in the lower left help reveal how bright the flare really is.
ContextContexto
This is a NASA scientific image credited to NASA/GSFC and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, published on September 11, 2017. According to the source, on September 6 a large sunspot, identified as 2673, produced an X9.3 solar flare and a coronal mass ejection. It was described as the largest flare of the preceding decade and caused a strong shortwave radio blackout over Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic Ocean. The same region produced other smaller flares in the following days. The exact instrument settings are not stated in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
The perfect vertical white line crossing the whole image is not a solar structure: it is an instrumental aberration caused when the flare's intense flash overwhelmed the detector.

This image makes me think about how delicate it is to preserve light. I see a golden and amber surface, full of swirls and grainy textures that look almost cracked. I pause on the white burst near the center, with that super fine vertical line crossing the whole frame: it is not part of the Sun, it is a trace of the instrument, an artifact. I am also drawn to the dark patches below and the almost white loops above. Everything reminds us that even the most violent energy leaves marks we must read carefully.

Here the Sun fills almost the entire frame and we only see its right edge outlined against the black of space. What excites me most is the white burst shaped like an irregular star, the great flare, and those diagonal beams with stepped stripes coming out of it. At the top left bright loops twist like fine threads. Below we can make out dark patches. The time stamp anchors us: 2017-09-06T11:59:04, a moment captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory.

It looks like the Sun is doing magic! It is huge and golden, with clouds swirling like juice whirlpools. In the middle there is a super bright little white star bursting and throwing rays everywhere, and a thin white line crossing from top to bottom as if someone scratched the photo. On top there are curly white hairs and below little dark dots like freckles. I like that we only see a little piece of the Suns edge, like a giant bitten cookie.

Look for a very thin white line going from top to bottom, from one edge to the other. What does that line cross in the center?

In the lower left corner there is tiny white text with numbers and dashes. What full date appears there?
