What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the solar disk cropped against the absolute black of space, with more than half of its upper portion covered by the sharp, curved shadow of Earth during an eclipse. The Sun appears in intense reddish, orange and golden tones, with a grainy, fiery texture reminiscent of lava or glowing embers seen in extreme close-up. Near the center a much brighter active region stands out in whitish-yellow, with twisting filaments and luminous loops curling above the surface. The solar limb is uneven and slightly spiky, with small prominences and a faint halo along the edge. The lower half of the disk remains fully rounded and clearly defined, while the upper part vanishes beneath the black silhouette, whose boundary is clean yet allows a soft diffuse glow at the contact line. In the lower left corner a white timestamp reads 2018-02-11T07:09:53. The composition is centered and vertical, with maximum contrast between the deep darkness of the background and the incandescent solar matter, conveying both colossal scale and the delicacy of space-based observation.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large black shadow biting into the Sun and follow its curve to grasp the eclipse. Then linger on the bright central spot and trace its filaments; that contrast between total darkness and solar activity is the heart of the piece.

ContextContexto

Scientific image captured on February 11, 2018 by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), launched in 2010, according to source data from NASA/JPL. It shows a total solar eclipse as seen by the observatory, when Earth passed between the spacecraft and the Sun for about 31 minutes. This event was not visible from Earth's surface and is due to SDO's geosynchronous orbit, which causes a three-week season twice a year when Earth briefly blocks its view of the Sun. The image was taken in extreme ultraviolet light and is part of a video clip covering about an hour and a half around the time of the eclipse. It is a scientific photograph in the Space and science category.

Curious detailDato curioso

SDO does not observe the Sun in visible light but in extreme ultraviolet, so the reddish and golden colors are an assigned palette to visualize a wavelength invisible to the human eye.

What captivates me most is the Sun's material quality. It is not a flat circle, but a granular surface, like lava or glowing embers in red, orange and golden tones, with a central yellowish-white active region full of luminous loops. The contrast with the absolute black of space and the sharp, curved shadow of Earth cutting across it is stunning. That spiky edge and the faint glow at the contact point reveal it was taken in extreme ultraviolet light. The small white time stamp at the bottom reminds us this is a precise scientific record.

This photo excites me because it is not the eclipse we see from the ground. Here it is seen by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory from its geosynchronous orbit on February 11, 2018. For about 31 minutes Earth slipped between the satellite and the Sun and blocked it, something no one on the surface could see. The reddish solar disk is bitten by that perfect black silhouette. At the center an incandescent active region shines brightly. Knowing this is part of an hour-and-a-half video in extreme ultraviolet makes me feel the privilege of this scientific viewpoint.

It looks like the Sun is a giant lava cookie! It is red and orange and shines so brightly, as if it were boiling. At the top there is a huge curved black shadow eating it, like a bite taken by Earth. In the middle there is a yellow spot with little sparkles that looks magical. Everything is in black space and looks super big and powerful. I like that at the bottom it has little white numbers showing the time, as if it were a space photo taken by a Sun spy robot.
