What you would seeLo que verías
Top-down view of the inner Solar System on a deep black background, with the Sun as a small intense yellow dot at the exact center. Thin elliptical lines orbit around it: the innermost correspond to Mercury, Venus, Earth —marked with a thick white line and a dot labeled Earth— and Mars, with small white labels in discreet type. A thinner, more elongated white ellipse crossing Earth’s path marks the trajectory of Didymos, with a tiny dot at the lower right end. The rest of the frame is dominated by a dense tangle of about 2,200 pale blue and cyan traces, semi-transparent and interwoven, representing other known potentially hazardous asteroids; they form a filamentous, almost textile-like cloud that thickens toward the edges and leaves a darker halo around the Sun. The light feels digital, flat and shadowless, with high contrast between the black void and the luminous filaments. The scale is astronomical and abstract: no relief or horizon, only orbital lines suggesting motion and accumulation. On close looking, subtle variations in thickness and opacity appear among the blue threads, and speckled black void peeking through the mesh.

Start at the yellow Sun in the center and move outward orbit by orbit to Earth and then to Didymos. Notice how Didymos’ thin white ellipse cuts through the blue web: that subtle intersection turns a technical chart into a meditation on risk and scale.

Orbital diagram released on November 17, 2021 by the Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, catalog PIA24565. It shows the orbit of binary asteroid Didymos around the Sun —a roughly 780-meter body orbited by a roughly 160-meter moonlet— against Earth’s orbit (thick white line) and the orbits of about 2,200 other known potentially hazardous asteroids, defined as larger than about 140 meters and passing within about 8 million kilometers of Earth’s orbit. Didymos’ moonlet was the target of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART), a kinetic impactor experiment to test asteroid deflection. The source notes Didymos poses no danger to Earth.

From my bench I first notice the deep black background, almost like velvet that has soaked up light. Floating over it are very fine threads in light blue and sky blue, about 2,200 semi-transparent strokes crossing like gauze. At the center the Sun is a small intense yellow circle with white elliptical orbits around it. I pause on the thick white line marking Earth and on the thinner elongated ellipse of Didymos that crosses it. The light is flat and digital, without shadows, and the contrast lets each filament breathe against the void.

This chart from NASA CNEOS, dated November 17 2021, puts things in perspective for me. At the center is the Sun, with Mercury, Venus, Earth with its thick white orbit and Mars around it. The thin elongated white ellipse is Didymos, a binary asteroid about 780 meters across with a moonlet about 160 meters. What is striking is the cloud of about 2,200 pale blue orbits of other potentially hazardous asteroids, defined as larger than about 140 meters and approaching within 8 million kilometers of our orbit. Didymos, the record notes, is not a danger, and its moonlet was the target of the DART mission.

It looks like someone drew with bright markers on a giant black sheet. In the middle there is a tiny yellow sun, like a marble. Around it there are white rings and one really thick one that says Earth. There is another more stretched white ring for Didymos with a tiny dot at the end. The prettiest part is the tangle of about 2,200 light blue threads that look like glowing spider webs everywhere. It looks crowded but also empty, as if everything were floating and slowly moving around the Sun.
