What you would seeLo que verías
Oblique orbital view of Earth's surface, curved toward the horizon at the upper left where black space meets the thin blue-white rim of the atmosphere. Dominating the center and south is a large, dark, fan-shaped feature: the Okavango inland delta, its fine branching distributaries looking like ink veins spread over arid plains. From it, a thin, golden, luminous thread extends northwest, the Okavango River caught in sunglint, winding in tight meanders across ochre, tan and brown terrain. The surrounding land is dry and mottled, with rough textures typical of savanna and semi-desert. To the north, over Angola, the air is veiled by pale whitish and grayish plumes of haze and smoke: dozens of small columns that spread and blur downwind. Light is intense and high, as in space photography, with no strong shadows but strong contrast between the specular shine of water and the opacity of smoke. The scale is continental; no cities or roads are visible at this altitude, only large-scale hydrological and atmospheric processes.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the golden river from the north down to its dark fan-like opening in the delta. Then look north to distinguish the gray veils of smoke over the plains. Noticing the contrast between the specular shine of water and the murky texture of the smoky atmosphere shifts the reading from a pristine landscape to a managed territory.
ContextContexto
Image captured on August 11, 1991, by NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) and listed in the NASA Image and Video Library. It shows the Okavango Swamp in Botswana (19.0S, 22.0E), where the Okavango River flows into a topographic trough to form an inland delta; water is trapped in meandering distributaries and lost to evaporation and transpiration. To the north in Angola, plumes from seasonal savanna burning for land clearing before agriculture fill the atmosphere with haze and smoke. It is a scientific photograph taken from orbit, a common technique of human spaceflight for Earth observation.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Okavango is one of the world's few large inland deltas: its waters never reach the sea but are lost to evaporation in the Kalahari Desert.

- What does the golden sunglint reveal about the relationship between the sun's position, the observer in orbit, and the water?¿Qué revela el sunglint dorado sobre la relación entre la posición del sol, el observador en órbita y el agua?
- How does your perception of the landscape change when you learn the smoke comes from intentional agricultural burning rather than natural wildfires?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del paisaje al saber que el humo proviene de quemas agrícolas intencionales y no de incendios naturales?
- What do we learn from seeing at continental scale processes that from the ground seem isolated, like a river and smoke?¿Qué nos enseña ver a escala continental procesos que desde tierra parecen aislados, como un río y el humo?

The conservatorLa restauradora
What holds my attention is the contrast between the permanent and the ephemeral. Below, the Okavango Delta looks like a dark fan-shaped stain, with very fine channels like ink veins across the ochre and beige plain. Above, the smoke over Angola is a whitish and grey veil that blurs with the wind. As a conservator I wonder what we would preserve: the trapped water that slowly evaporates and the human gesture of seasonal agricultural burns. Everything was photographed on August 11, 1991 from orbit, with that overhead light that reveals every detail.

From orbit Earth becomes a laboratory. In the upper left corner the thin blue-white atmosphere stands out against the black of space and the planet's curvature. In the center I recognize the inland Okavango Delta in Botswana, around 19.0S, 22.0E, and that golden thread rising to the northwest: it is the Okavango River shining due to sunglint, the specular reflection of the sun on water. To the north, smoke plumes over Angola show savanna burns. With no cities in sight, only hydrology and atmosphere at continental scale captured by the Johnson Space Center.

It looks like Earth is breathing. I see a big dark stain with lots of little threads opening like a hand fan, that is the Okavango swamp, and from there comes a golden river that shines a lot because the sun reflects on it and makes a path of light. Everything else is like dry land in brown and sand colors. Up near the black space, there are grey clouds that are not clouds, they are smoke from fires in Angola. I like that from so high you cannot see houses or streets, just water, land and smoke moving with the wind.
