An oblique orbital view shows Earth from space with a stark contrast between the blackness of the void and the sunlit surface below. Occupying the lower and central area is a huge fan-shaped, rounded lobe of white ice — Malaspina Glacier — with a mostly smooth but finely striated surface marked by thin concentric arcs that trace moraines and flow lines. Its bright white, tinged with pale blue-gray where shadowed or mixed with debris, stands out against the dark, rugged coastal terrain that rims it to the north. To the south of the ice, the snow-covered Saint Elias Mountains appear jagged and deeply incised, with sharp ridges, shadowed valleys and sunlit slopes that emphasize dramatic relief. Above the glacier a broad band of near-black represents the Gulf of Alaska, almost featureless except for a faint coastline and a small sliver of land at the far left edge. Low-angle sunlight sculpts crests and crevasses. The scale is immense: the ice spans tens of kilometers and looks like a giant white fingerprint on the map. Small details such as dark threads of entrained rock, subtle gradations where ice meets coastal plain, and elongated mountain shadows reward slow looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large fan-shaped white mass, then trace its concentric arcs toward the edges. Contrast the smoothness of the ice with the rough, sunlit texture of the southern mountains. Notice how the thin shoreline separates the ice from the dark ocean to grasp the true scale.

ContextContexto

Photograph taken November 3–14, 1994, during Space Shuttle Atlantis mission STS-66, credited to NASA/JSC, with a north-northeasterly orientation. It depicts Malaspina Glacier on the southern coast of Alaska, described in source data as a classic example of a piedmont glacier lying at the foot of a mountain range. According to the source, its ice is fed chiefly by the Seward Ice Field to the north (top of the view in the original description), flowing through three narrow outlets onto the coastal plain. Surge movements push earlier moraines outward into the concentric patterns visible along the ice mass flanks. No individual author is named beyond the institutional credit.

Curious detailDato curioso

Malaspina covers nearly 3,900 km², so large it is readily visible to the naked eye from orbit and is often cited as the world’s largest piedmont glacier.

From my perspective I focus on texture and contrast. The white of the Malaspina Glacier is not flat: it shows bluish grays, soft shadows and dark filaments that are moraines carried by the ice. I am struck by how the low light sculpts each fold and reveals the relief without needing to touch it. It is an image from November 1994 taken from Atlantis, and it still keeps its sharpness. Preserving this kind of photograph is also preserving the memory of ice.

Seeing Earth from orbit always moves me. This oblique view from STS-66 puts us in 1994 aboard Atlantis looking north-northeast over Alaska. Below, Malaspina Glacier spreads like a huge fan over the coastal plain, fed by the Seward Ice Field and escaping through three narrow outlets between mountains. The concentric lines are moraines pushed by intermittent advances. It is pure geography seen from space, a kilometer-scale pattern that looks like a fingerprint.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant white fingerprint on Earth! I see Malaspina Glacier like a huge melted ice cream spreading like a fan. It has curvy little lines like the prints on my fingers and it is surrounded by mountains with sharp peaks that make long shadows. At the top there is a black part that is the Gulf of Alaska. I like to imagine I am on the space shuttle Atlantis looking down in 1994 and that the ice shines brightly against the dark.
