What you would seeLo que verías
An oblique orbital view of Earth dominates the frame, with the planet's curvature sweeping diagonally from upper left to lower right. In the lower foreground, the crisp, dark silhouette of a portion of the shuttle intrudes, anchoring the scale and reminding the viewer of the human vantage point. The vast ocean fills most of the image in deep navy and cerulean, stippled with sun glint and scattered, wispy white cloud formations that trail like brushstrokes. Elongated dark landmasses emerge from the sea: the larger island of Java on the right, and two smaller islands, Bali and Lombok, toward the upper left. A linear chain of darker spots and volcanic cones runs along the spine of the archipelago, barely rising above the haze. Faint, pale plumes drift upward from a few summits, almost dissolving into the atmosphere. The thin, pale blue rim of the atmosphere hugs the limb of Earth before yielding to the absolute black of space in the upper background. Lateral sunlight is sharp yet softened by a brownish-gray veil that mutes details, suggesting suspended smoke and dust over the region.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the curved limb of Earth and its thin blue atmosphere, then follow the dark island chain from right to left. Look for the faint volcanic plumes and the brownish haze softening the entire scene, as those details reveal the drought and fires at the time.
ContextContexto
Photograph taken on November 14, 1994, from the Space Shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-66, operated by NASA's Johnson Space Center. It shows an oblique view to the south over the Indonesian islands of Java, Bali and Lombok. According to the source description, the dark linear array across the islands is the volcanic chain forming the backbone of this area, which had been active in the previous months, with steam plumes visible over Arjuno and Merapi volcanoes. The hazy appearance is linked to an extended drought over Indonesia and Australia and to widespread fires in Indonesia, New Guinea and northern Australia that produced a regional pall of smoke. It is an example of scientific photography and Earth observation from low Earth orbit.

Curious detailDato curioso
STS-66 carried the ATLAS-3 laboratory to study atmospheric composition and solar energy, so many of its images were intentionally made to document atmospheric phenomena such as haze, smoke and volcanic activity from orbit.

- How does seeing an island or volcano as a tiny speck in the ocean change your sense of scale?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de una isla o un volcán al verlo como una pequeña mancha en el océano?
- What does the smoky haze reveal about the links between climate, fire and human activity when viewed from space?¿Qué nos dice el velo brumoso sobre la relación entre clima, fuego y actividad humana incluso vista desde el espacio?
- What do you feel when you see Earth framed by the blackness of space and a fragment of the shuttle?¿Qué sientes al ver la Tierra enmarcada por la oscuridad del espacio y un fragmento del transbordador?

From my perspective I focus on how fragile the atmosphere looks, like a thin pale blue band separating the ocean from the absolute black of space. The brownish haze veiling Java, Bali and Lombok is not a flaw, it is real smoke from fires and drought captured in the shot from November 14, 1994. The dark silhouette of Atlantis in the foreground creates a sharp contrast and reminds us of the human scale against immensity.

I love the geometry of this oblique south-facing view taken from Atlantis on mission STS-66. The curvature of Earth on the diagonal and the specular glitter of the sun on the deep blue ocean give us a lesson in orbital optics. The volcanic chain crossing Java like a backbone reveals the activity of peaks such as Arjuno and Merapi, with faint plumes of vapor barely distinguishable among the low clouds and haze.

It feels like I am peeking out the window of a giant spaceship! Below everything is blue sea with sparkly sunlight and little white clouds like splashes. You can see three dark long islands, the biggest is Java and the small ones are Bali and Lombok. A line of little black dots are volcanoes puffing tiny smoke. Up top the sky becomes a thin light blue line and then everything turns into deep space black, with the shuttle shadow framing my picture like a border.
