What you would seeLo que verías

A color photograph, almost square in format, taken from high above the Earth. At the bottom, in the foreground and cropped by the edge of the frame, is the rear section of a spacecraft: a black, glossy surface with gold and white reflections, a tall, pointed vertical fin in the center, and, on the right, a pale cylindrical arm extending diagonally. Its outsized presence in the frame is a reminder that we are looking out through the window of a mechanical observer. Beyond it, the land unfolds. Occupying the center and upper part of the image, a large fan-shaped patch in blue-gray, greenish, and whitish tones opens toward a sea of intense blue that fills the upper right corner. Inside the fan, fine winding veins, pale specks, and a grainy, mosaic-like texture can be made out. To the left and below, the desert appears smooth, in ochres, beige, and off-white, with an irregular dark patch near the left edge. Thin, dark lines cross the desert and connect with the fan. Along the right edge, over the sea, fragments of black characters are visible, remnants of the film or photographic record.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the spacecraft at the bottom, then let your eye follow its vertical fin toward the fan of the delta, as if it were an arrow. Next, compare the smooth, pale desert with the fine, grainy texture of the irrigated land. The thin line to the right of the delta, almost easy to miss, changes the scale of the scene when you recognize it as the Suez Canal.

ContextContexto

According to NASA's Image and Video Library, this photograph was taken on October 13, 1984, and is credited to NASA/JSC. It shows the Nile River Delta in Egypt, around 30.0°N, 31.0°E, irrigated by the river and its many distributaries. The source describes it as some of the richest farmland in the world and, at the time of that description, home to some 45 million people, over half of Egypt's population. Cairo sits at the apex of the delta. The source also mentions the pyramids and sphinx at Giza, across the river from Cairo, and the Suez Canal to the right of the delta, although those features are not clearly distinguishable at this scale.

The word “delta” for a river mouth comes from the triangular shape of the Greek letter delta (Δ), a form historically associated with the Nile Delta.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the presence of the spacecraft in the foreground change the way we relate to a landscape photographed from orbit?¿Cómo cambia la presencia de la nave en primer plano nuestra manera de relacionarnos con un paisaje fotografiado desde la órbita?
  2. What does the sharp contrast between desert and irrigated land reveal, and what does this distance hide about the lives of the people who inhabit it?¿Qué revela el contraste marcado entre el desierto y la tierra irrigada, y qué oculta esta distancia sobre la vida de quienes lo habitan?
  3. At what point does a photograph of a territory stop being a landscape and become a map, a document, or an abstraction?¿En qué momento una fotografía de un territorio deja de ser paisaje y se vuelve mapa, documento o abstracción?

What holds my attention is the contrast of materials: below, the glossy black of the spacecraft with golden and white reflections, solid and very close, and beyond it the granular texture of the fan-shaped delta with winding veins. I notice the smooth ochres of the desert against the blues and greens of the irrigated land. The fragments of black characters over the sea remind me that every image has a physical support and traces of how it was recorded.

This picture is from October 13, 1984 and was taken from a space shuttle, which is clear from the tall pointed vertical fin and the light cylindrical robotic arm in the foreground. From that height we see the Nile delta fanning out toward the intense blue of the Mediterranean. At its apex lies Cairo, where the river splits into many branches that irrigate one of the richest farmlands on Earth, home to millions of people.

It feels like we are peeking out the window of a giant spaceship! Down below you can see its shiny black tail with a shark-like fin and an arm stretching out diagonally. Farther away there is a huge fan with little lines like veins and tiny white dots, which is the Nile River delta opening into the blue sea. On one side everything is cookie-colored desert and there are dark lines that look like water roads.
