What you would seeLo que verías

Horizontal pencil drawing enclosed by a thin double hand-ruled border. The lower half is an open, smooth expanse of white suggesting deep snow; on the left foreground a dark, solid signpost stands planted in the drift, while on the lower right a tiny, faintly sketched wooden structure peeks among snow-covered shrubs. In the middle ground to the right sits a steep-roofed house with a snow-laden white roof, pale walls, a gray door and small dark windows; its side gable is rendered as a dense black mass. Tucked against that shadow is a minute light-clad figure, barely more than a vertical stroke. A low plank fence emerges from the snow behind the house. The background is a medium-gray sky filled with dense diagonal white dashes falling at an angle, conveying heavy snowfall and a hazy, overcast atmosphere. Two slender leafless trees with twisted trunks and spindly branches, drawn with fine delicate lines, flank the composition alongside small bare bushes. Light is diffuse and muted, as on a storm day, with soft contrasts between the white of the paper, smudged grays and the solid blacks of the post and the shadowed eave. The surface shows gentle pencil shading, erasures and reserved whites that emphasize cold, stillness and quiet isolation.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark signpost on the left that anchors the view, then follow the diagonal streaks of snow toward the white house. Notice the tiny figure under the dark eave; its small scale shifts the narrative and makes the storm the main presence.

ContextContexto

The work is titled Snow Storm in Vermont and is attributed to Mary Altha Nims (1817–1907), an American artist active in the 19th century, according to records from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Drawings department as a Gift of Richard Seymour Bayham. The medium is listed as pencil and the date is given broadly as 1800s, with no further detail available. No source description of the scene is provided, but the title and imagery point to a rural New England winter landscape, a common subject for folk and amateur American art of the period. Its naive composition and spare handling are typical of non-academic draftsmanship of the time. Whether it depicts a specific location in Vermont is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The artist creates falling snow by leaving the white of the paper for the flakes and shading the sky in gray, a negative-space drawing method common in 19th-century pencil work.

I focus on how this 19th century pencil on paper drawing is made. The hand drawn double border frames everything and already shows light wear. Notice the contrast between the reserved white of the paper for the deep snow and the soft gray shading of the sky, where diagonal white strokes suggest falling snow. The solid blacks of the signpost and the eave stand out against very delicate shading. It is a naive, fragile work that needs low light and humidity control to preserve its quiet quality.

This medium gray sky draws me in because there is no sun, only the diffuse dim light of a storm that erases horizons. The diagonal white strokes falling across the background act like a curtain hiding the landscape, just as an intense snowfall reduces visibility at night. The house with its whitened roof and dark small windows looks like a minimal shelter in the white vastness. In the foreground the smooth snow covers almost half the image, reminding us how small we are under such a weather event.

It looks so cold just to look at it! White snow covers everything, almost half the drawing, and there are no footprints. On the left there is a dark post standing firm like a guardian and on the right a little house with a snow covered roof and tiny dark windows. Under the black side of the house there is a very small light colored person, almost hidden. I like the two leafless little trees with skinny branches and the white streaks that look like snow falling really fast across the gray sky.

In the foreground on the left, what dark solid object is stuck in the deep snow?

    HintPista

It is tall, dark and stands alone in the white expanse of the left foreground.

  2. #2

What color is the door of the house with the snowy roof seen on the right?

    HintPista

It is not white like the snow nor black like the eave, it is an intermediate tone on the light wall.

  3. #3

How many thin leafless trees with twisted trunks flank the scene?

    HintPista

Look for the fine line silhouettes that stand out against the gray snowy sky.
