What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a wide, horizontal landscape, almost abstract, divided into parallel bands. In the upper portion, roughly the top third of the frame, the sky shifts from pale sky blue along the top edge to a more intense blue just above the horizon. Below that is a thin, diffuse band of lilac or grayish pink, then a yellow glow that deepens into brilliant orange right at the horizon line. The Sun itself is not visible, but its early light colors the entire edge. The lower half is filled with a dark expanse of clouds seen from above. Their tops, silhouetted against the orange, form an uneven outline of bumps, ridges, and small towers, like a mountain range in shadow. A few upper edges catch a warm, reddish halo, while the rest sinks into very dark browns, almost black, especially in the bottom corners. The texture looks soft and cottony at a distance but remains indistinct, with areas only barely suggested by the grazing light. Near the center, a faint vertical line, slightly to the right, crosses the dark area; it is probably a reflection or a mark on the window. High in the blue, two tiny dark specks can be made out. The scale is immense, and with no human references, it is hard to grasp.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bands of color at the top and follow them downward, from blue to the intense orange on the horizon. Then look for the silhouettes of the cloud tops: that irregular edge is what turns an abstract gradient into a landscape. Finally, notice the near-darkness in the lower half, where almost everything remains in shadow.
ContextContexto
According to the source data (NASA Image and Video Library, credit NASA/JSC), this photograph was taken on September 15, 2022, from the International Space Station as it orbited 258 miles — about 415 kilometers — above the Pacific Ocean, south of the Hawaiian island chain. It shows the beginning of an orbital sunrise, as sunlight starts to light up the cloud tops. Which astronaut took the picture is not known; the source only attributes it to JSC, NASA's Johnson Space Center. It is safe general knowledge that, because of its low, fast orbit, the station experiences many sunrises and sunsets during each Earth day.

Curious detailDato curioso
The International Space Station takes about 90 minutes to complete one orbit around Earth, so its crew can witness roughly 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets in 24 hours.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the experience of a sunrise change when it is seen from orbit rather than from the ground?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de un amanecer cuando se mira desde la órbita y no desde la superficie?
- Why can a photograph with no people, buildings, or landmarks still convey such a strong sense of place?¿Por qué una fotografía sin personas, construcciones ni referencias conocidas puede transmitir una sensación tan fuerte de lugar?
- What does the dark lower half of the image suggest about what we cannot yet see, even from space?¿Qué sugiere la mitad inferior, casi a oscuras, sobre todo lo que aún no podemos ver ni siquiera desde el espacio?

From my worktable I notice how the light is preserved in such delicate layers. That bright orange on the horizon is very fragile and any retouching would have oversaturated it, but here it gradates into yellow and then into a very faint grayish lilac. I am struck by how the blue becomes deeper near the horizon. The clouds below look almost black, but if you look closely you can make out reddish halos on their crests.

What we see is an orbital sunrise photographed on September 15, 2022 from the International Space Station, about 415 kilometers above the Pacific south of Hawaii. The orange band is the still hidden Sun lighting the atmosphere edge on. Above, the blue that gets paler is the sky seen from orbit. Below, the clouds form a dark mountain range silhouetted against the light. From that altitude the station sees many sunrises each day because of its fast orbit.

It looks like someone painted the sky with crayons in straight lines. At the top there is light blue, then a stronger blue, then a little purple stripe and at the end an orange that glows a lot like mango juice. Below there are clouds that look like mountains of black cotton and some little tips look red because the sun hits them. It looks huge and with no people. I like to imagine I am floating up there looking at all that.
